What are the skills needed to study the natural world? Nature Discovery, a gallery for the under-sevens and their carers, encourages shared development of observational and analytical skills, literacy and numeracy, through displays and specially devised activities.
Three mini 'worlds' are oriented around a central information and activity point, each world reflecting particular landscape characteristics (wood, meadow,
sea-bed) via sound installations and decorative graphics inspired by 1950s illustrations and contemporary Japanese animation.
Display cases are designed to appear as integrated elements in each landscape - a hollow tree-trunk, burrows in a grassy meadow and deep-sea observation windows - and to enable close examination, at child height, of the objects on display.
